Did Alexander Zverev Beat His Girlfriends?
All probabilities, odds, and adjustments are the author's opinion and not statements of fact.
Two weeks ago, under the bright lights of Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens, Alexander Zverev blasted an unreturned serve down the T to win the 2026 US Open.
Before this year, Zverev had spent his 14-year career chasing a Grand Slam, one of tennis' four most important tournaments. In the 2020 COVID edition of the US Open, he lost his mind and choked a massive lead to lose in five sets. After snapping his ankle in half in 2022, he'd rehab and grind his way back to finals losses at the 2024 French Open and 2025 Australian Open. You got the sense he might never get over the hump.
In 2026, Zverev's game caught fire. With the world #1 knocked out of contention in early rounds, Zverev rode a wave of momentum as the favorite to win the French Open. He followed this up with a dominant performance at the US Open.
Yet our guy has surprisingly few sponsorship deals and shallow brand appeal outside the world of tennis. What gives? He is a tall, fairly handsome metropolitan man well-spoken in three different languages. He'd come back from adversity and slayed his old mental demons. He'd been doing all of this while battling type 1 diabetes...
It's probably the different domestic violence allegations from two previous girlfriends.
Let me be very clear that Alexander Zverev has not been proven guilty in any court of law, civil or criminal.
But really, twice?

Zverev was in a relationship with his first accuser, Olya Sharypova, from 2018 - 2019. What is unqualified ? Briefly flipping through the literature, I see most sources have the percentage of DV allegations confirmed false at 2-10%, giving us an upper bound on this probability of 90% to 98%. On the other hand child custody evaluators in an American study1 estimate false claims at roughly , or true claims at ~75%. Conservatively assign .
Zverev was in a relationship with Brenda Patea from 2019 to 2020. Their daughter was born in March 2021, and in this case there was a live custody dispute. A 2005 study in California2 evaluated DV allegations against fathers to be roughly 40% substantiated during custody disputes. Assign .
I want to know if at least one of the allegations is true. Assuming independence, what is the complement of this, that both are false? , or
Then, going forward, I'll work in odds space to make the math easier to follow. If , then the odds are , and so forth. gives us odds of 17:3. (17:3)
The governing body of men's tennis, the Association of Tennis Professionals, performed an investigation with the conclusion that they were "unable to substantiate", stating that the allegations did not meet their internal threshold for punishment. I think this is twice as likely if DV did not occur versus if it did, so I divide by an evidence multiplier of 2. (17:6)
Sharypova alleges emotional abuse through late 2018, a choking instance in August 2019, a punch in the face in September 2019, and more choking and punching in October 2019.
Zverev appeared in public with scratches on his neck on October 10, 2019, the same day that Sharypova was no longer present in his spectator player's box. Sharypova sent photos of her own bruises to a friend on 10/12/2019, one year before going public. Both sets of marks are consistent with Sharypova's physical description of Zverev's alleged choking. Multiply by 3. (17:2)
In the course of her allegations, she did not seek any money and did not file a lawsuit, instead going straight to a journalist, incurring later legal repercussions for no financial benefit. Multiply by 2. (17:1)
Sharypova attempted suicide twice in 2019, which is corroborated by Zverev's communications to his own family. I don't think this gives us evidence either way. (17:1)
All of Sharypova's evidence flows through one journalist (Ben Rothenberg) and one friend group. Divide by 1.5. (34:3)
Patea's allegations are less complete as most detail falls within sealed court documents. The main public information available is a choking allegation in May 2020.
In 2023, the German prosecutors in the Patea case sought a Strafbefehl (penalty order without trial) on the basis of sufficient preliminary evidence and the judge issued it. Multiply by 3. (34:1)
In June 2024, Patea and Zverev agreed to an out-of-court settlement with undisclosed terms, presumably financial. The settlement does not constitute a finding of guilt or an admission of guilt. Their justification was the interest of their child. Divide by 2. (17:1)
Zverev was ordered by the court to pay €150,000 to the state and €50,000 to the charity as conditions to allow the out-of-court settlement to go forward. Multiply by 1.25. (85:4, ~ 95%)

The individual points of evidence against Zverev are independently weak but numerous, while there is a dearth of evidence that supports his account.
Where do I stand?
Ninety-five percent.
